I manage a number of properties with retaining walls, and when one needs replacing the first question is always the same: segmental block or poured concrete? Owners tend to have an opinion based on looks, but the choice should come down to height, soil, drainage, and budget, because the two systems fail and succeed for different reasons. Getting it right the first time is far cheaper than discovering the wrong choice a few wet seasons later.
Segmental block walls
Segmental retaining walls are built from interlocking concrete units, dry-stacked without mortar, often stepped back slightly as they rise. Their big advantages are flexibility and drainage. Because the units are not rigidly bonded, the wall can tolerate minor ground movement without cracking, flexing slightly instead of failing brittlely. And the open system, combined with gravel backfill, drains readily, which matters because water pressure is what kills most walls. They also go up relatively quickly and, for lower walls, can be a reasonable owner-directed project.
Their limit is height and load. Taller segmental walls rely on geogrid, layers of reinforcing mesh extending back into the retained soil to tie the wall to the earth behind it. Skip or shortcut the geogrid on a tall wall and it will eventually bulge or slide, because the blocks alone cannot hold back that much soil.
Poured concrete walls
A poured (cast-in-place) concrete wall is a monolithic reinforced structure, steel rebar inside a continuous concrete pour. Its strength is exactly that rigidity and reinforcement: for tall walls, walls holding back heavy surcharge loads like a driveway or structure above, or difficult sites, an engineered poured wall carries loads a block wall cannot. It presents a solid face and, properly built, is extremely durable.
The trade-offs are cost, drainage, and movement. Poured walls are more expensive to form and pour, they require deliberate drainage design, weep holes and a base drain, because the solid wall itself will not let water through, and being rigid they crack rather than flex if the ground moves or the drainage fails. How to actually choose
Height is the first filter. For low walls, under about three to four feet, either works and segmental is often the practical, cost-effective pick. As height climbs, the engineering demands rise for both, and past roughly four feet you are almost always into required permits and a stamped design regardless of type. Soil and drainage come next: sites with movement or where flexibility helps can favor segmental, while heavy loads and tall retention favor poured. Budget is real but should not drive a tall wall toward an under-engineered block solution to save money, because that is the classic false economy.
